Comments about Large Wheeled Split Duffel:

I've had this bag four years. I rate it highly durable as after dozens of flights the airlines haven't broken or even scuffed it to amount to anything. I see other reviewers saying its too big or too heavy when packed - I say it is perfect for 4-5 day fishing and hunting trips.

Comments about Large Wheeled Split Duffel:

This was my favorite bag until the airlines got serious about charging overweight fees. I use Tumi packing cubes for clothing,a hanging travel kit and assorted Tumi accessory pouches. Using those items, the bag weighed in at 52-54 lbs. After being hit 2x with overweight fees, I adjusted my packing a bit. I used large ziploc bags for clothing, and a lighter weight toiletry kit and managed to get the weight down to 48lbs. The split compartments and outside pockets are a great way to stay organized. I am a Tumi devotee and own several luggage pieces, an assortment of business cases and accessory items. Some pieces I have owned for 17 years and they still look great. I would gladly purchase another bag similar to this, if it were made in a lighter weight material.

    Perfect Extended Trip Bag

    By JoeV

    Pros

    • 2 separate compartments
    • Included garment bag

    Cons

      Best Uses

      • Extended travel
      • Packing lots of shoes

Comments about Large Wheeled Split Duffel:

The quality, craftmanship, and style is what one would expect from Tumi, top-notch.

I use this bag for extended trips (7+ days) or if traveling with a friend on shorter trips. It holds everything I need including the Alpha Hanging Travel Kit (#22190). I use the lower zip section to hold multiple pairs of shoes (6 pair to be exact when traveling with a friend). The top section is large enough to hold clothing for 2 or for those trips when cold weather gear must be packed. The side pockets are great for storing all accessories. Be careful how you pack though since weight could be an issue. With 6 pairs of shoes, clothes for 2 people for 4 days, winter jackets/layers, and toiletries I came in right at 50 pounds.

I agree with another reviewer in that I would like the bag to have come with at least two TSA friendly locks instead of one. One for the top compartment and one for the bottom compartment. Also, one of the leather side traps/handles gets scuffed up when the bag is stood on end and/or wheeled around.

      Pushed the weight limits

Comments about Large Wheeled Split Duffel:

Tumi needs to modify the product specs. Dimensions are nice, but what we really need are approximate weights of each luggage piece packed full. With airlines charging fees for overweight bags and tour companies frowning upon bags over 50lbs, packed weight is the spec most valuable.

I purchased 2 large/split/wheeled duffels for our recent vacation. Without using the exterior pockets, and a little free space in the top section, they weighed in at 51 and 48 pounds.

I would also suggest Tumi include 2 locks per bag vs 1 (for both the top section and bottom). You can access the top section via the bottom. Based upon the cost of each bag, what's one more lock.

          Some design flaws

          By Kiwi traveler

          from San Clemente

Comments about Large Wheeled Split Duffel:

The handles in the middle are too short. It is very difficult to get the two handles together and then snap the leather center piece. The nylon straps should be several inches longer, like most other duffles. The quality of the snap is also poor and broke the first time I used it.
Side pockets do not lock and I had items taken by airport baggage handlers, very easy and quick to access so it is and easy target.
It should also have another handle at the bottom making it easier to pick up and put in a vehicle. Most duffles I have used do have a handle at both ends and they are much easier to move around.
Love the shoe compartment and want to see it Tumi backs up the repair before I recommend the item to anyone else.

Great Bag for strong and tall men

          By Frequent Traveller

          from Dubai

          Pros

          • Choice of handles
          • Easily accessible
          • Lots of space

          Cons

          • Full - difficult to lift
          • Full - too heavy to roll

          Best Uses

          • Frequent hotel changes
          • Sports equipment

Comments about Large Wheeled Split Duffel:

Recent 4 weeks international business trip with lots of clothes & shoes ! Easy to find your clothes, easy access. Easy to identify if you buy a colour. Great as collapsable. Sufficient handles on various sides !
Once filled and loaded, to roll through airport, becomes very heavy. Difficult to lift onto scale at check-in. Due to shape/length 26kgs feel heavier then 32 in other suitcases. not convinced I would buy it again.
Recommend to strong male friend, not to lady friends.

Is it as good as Tumi bag should be?

              By John

              from San Francisco

              Pros

              • Good for extended travel
              • VERY GOOD QUALITY

              Cons

              • Cannot lock front pockets
              • Pockets are very shallow

              Best Uses

Comments about Large Wheeled Split Duffel:

The bad has few BIG design issues comparing with Extra large Duffel bag or any other Tumi bags/products.

Very shallow front pockets - it is split design bag so probably not much could be done unless dual pockets would be on the other side and sawn over the split. This would be good feature.

The front pockets cannot be locket together - the zipper on the larger pocket is sawn in wrong direction so by the same it does not allow the user to put a lock on both pockets together like you can do on any other bags.
