Good case - bad lock

Pros

  • Good Capacity
  • High Quality
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Tsa Lock Is Useless

Best Uses

  • Long Vacations

Comments about Large Trip Packing Case:

The case is light and rolls easily. I've taken it on two trips; one to Europe (extended - 4 cities) and a second trip domestically. The extension handle seems fragile, we'll see how long it holds up.

However, Tumi's entire approach to the TSA lock is totally flawed.

The bag can only be locked when the number wheels are set to your combination. When TSA uses their key to unlock the bag, they cannot re-lock it because they don't know your combination. So as soon as TSA opens your bag, it's open the rest of your trip! Bad lock design, Tumi should be able to design a lock that can be re-locked by TSA.

Comments about Large Trip Packing Case:

I wanted to fall in love with this high-tech suitcase, but haven't. I live in Europe and frequent the US where I always fill two suitcases and a large carry-on with 'loot' for the return trip. The suitcase excels in its holding capacity and light-weight architecture allowing for more items than similar sized suitcases.

However try moving two suitcases like this and a carry-on on wheels. It's not easy. This suitcase doesn't have the strength to carry a carry-on as a 'pony bag' while it's being pulled or on-top if it's being pushed. I tried, and the handle bent (since repaired Tumi).

When I do fill the bag to the top and push down on the cover to shut it, I really feel like the zipper might give. The zipper and seams don't resemble the sturdiness you find in the Alpha models (albeit they are much heavier).

After a year's worth of travel the silver color has its fair share of scapes and scratches. Nothing too bad, but it does show wear fairly quickly.

If I was a traveler who usually traveled with only one checked bag and one carry-on + wanted to push a light suitcase + wanted to look stylish + had deep pockets to buy a bag with great warranty service, then this is the bag I'd buy.

Unfortuantely I travel heavy and I'll limit my suitcase collection to only one of these as a result.
